BRANFORD, CT – The Board of Finance has unanimously approved moving $38,400 from next year’s police department contingency fund into its regular budget so the process of adding a deputy chief – and possibly Police Chief Kevin Halloran’s successor – can begin.

The finance board approved the move at its most recent meeting, after hearing First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove saying he “supported” the proposal.

“It’s a lengthy process to bring someone one board” to potentially become the next police chief, Cosgrove told the finance board.

Police Chief Kevin Halloran has made no secret of the fact that his years serving the town as its top cop are winding down. At the most recent Board of Police Commissioners meeting the board discussed the leadership of the department after that time comes.

Halloran has been Branford police chief since 2011, when he replaced John DeCarlo. Halloran has worked in the Branford police department since 1989.

The commissioners, noting that Halloran will likely be retiring around 2020, voted to ask the Board of Finance to move one-third of the salary of a not-yet funded deputy chief’s position – or $38,400 – from contingency to the police department’s next year budget.
