Branford Beaches Draw Concerns, Officials Confident Fix Can Be Made: Report

Two local beaches are historically have high levels of bacteria.

BRANFORD, CT - Local town and health officials say they are confident they can find a remedy to the high levels of bacteria that can be found at Branford Point Beach and Johnson’s Beach, the New Haven Register reports.

Both beaches rank among the top 40 out of more than 200 beaches on Long Island Sound for elevated bacteria levels, the Register reports.

Curt Johnson, executive director of Save the Sound, a bi-state program of Connecticut Fund for the Environment told Shore Publishing the data “tells us a sad story,” but he added "The good news is that most of these bacterial contamination sources at our beaches are super local, and the solutions are super local as well.

A meeting was held Wednesday night and officials say they can fix the issue which is likely a result of runoff from storm drains that includes pesticides and other harmful items that end up in the water.

Local health officials are working with others include Yale officials to find the source of the bacteria.

But the news isn’t all bad, last year was a pretty good one for Branford beaches. Only the Clark Avenue beach was closed due to elevated bacteria levels, and that was likely due to the low amount of rain last summer.
