UPDATE: Branford Deputy Fire Chief Ronald Mullen Killed After Being Struck by a Train
The Fire Department said Mullen, who first became a full-time member in 1981, died after being struck by a train Wednesday night.

The Branford Fire Department shared extremely sad news Thursday morning.
“It is with deep regret, we relay news of the sudden passing of Deputy Chief/Deputy Fire Marshal Ronald R. Mullen. Deputy Chief Mullen joined the Branford Fire Department as a cadet member in 1976 and became a member of the career staff in 1981.
Over his nearly four decade career, he was one of the most respected Incident Commanders, fire investigators, and educators in the state. Details of arrangements will be forwarded when they become available,” the Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

WTNH News 8 confirms that Mullen was killed when he was struck by a train last night in Branford.
The accident occurred at 7:20 p.m. Police are investigating as Mullen was struck on the tracks near Pleasant Point Road. The cause of death has not yet been released.

The fire union also wrote, “It is with heavy hearts we pass on the news of the sudden passing of Deputy Chief Ronald R. Mullen. DC Mullen was a 34 year member of our local and a respected leader and friend. he will be dearly missed. This Union, department and community will not be the same without him. Rest easy brother.”
Branford Police Chief Kevin Halloran said, “On behalf of the the men and women of the Branford Police Department,I extend our deepest condolences to the Mullen Family and to his extended family, the men and women of the Branford Fire Department. Ron will be greatly missed.”
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement today on the passing of Branford Deputy Fire Chief Ron Mullen:
“As was the entire Branford community, I was shocked to learn of Deputy Chief Mullen’s sudden and tragic passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time,” DeLauro said.
