The single biggest issue in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it:
The challenge for Branford in the years ahead will be responsibly growing the tax base, while striking the appropriate balance of not over-burdening town services. Increased revenue and controlled spending keeps property taxes stable for our residents. As we grow the town’s tax base, we will be able to make smart and meaningful investments in public education and our infrastructure. Stable taxes, improved schools, and investments in our quality of life lead to increased property values across the board.
Ten minutes from our community, meaningful investments are being made to allow for commercial air travel to and from Tweed New Haven Airport. Branford must capitalize on this and market our community as ideal for families, businesses and visitors.
Critical differences between me and my opponents:
The wonderful thing about our system of government is that the Representative Town Meeting allows many different people to serve, who each bring a different and unique skill set. I believe what I bring as a candidate is a long term interest and commitment to Branford, as this is the Town my husband and I have chosen to raise our three children, who are all under the age of 5. As a wife, mother and local realtor, I want Branford to be the best it can be for the long term, so my three children can grow up in a community with tremendous opportunity, and excellent schools and quality of life.
Accomplishments:
I have the privilege of having an active real estate practice in the Branford community. This allows me to come in contact with Branford residents every single day. I hear their concerns, share their hopes for our community and also gain constructive feedback that I know can and will make our community better. In addition, I am the President and founder of the Melissa Marottoli Hogan Foundation, and a 501(c)(3) foundation named for my late identical twin sister. The foundation is dedicated to raising funds for groundbreaking cancer research. I have had the good fortune of working with both the business and medical community to raise funds and awareness for an issue of importance to so many families. I believe my professional and philanthropic background augments my service in local government.
Other issues:
As former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill once said, “all politics is local.” I believe at the local level, progress transcends politics and I believe we should all work across the aisle to make our community the best it can be.
We must allow our seniors, who built this town, to age in place with dignity and that starts with a predictable tax rate.
What else would you like voters to know about you?
Having served the people of Branford for the past 4 years I have experience and continue my enthusiasm for being a public servant. I will avail myself to anyone in my district and to help answer questions or promote ideas or opinions to the larger board.
