The single biggest issue in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it:

Consistent and relevant communication about things that directly affect children and families in Branford.

Critical differences between me and my opponents:

I bring multiple perspectives to the Board. I have the perspective of a parent whose three children each experienced school differently. As the parent of adults now, I can appreciate what worked, what didn't work, and ultimately, what really mattered. There is value in being able to reflect on the past in a way that is nearly impossible while your kids are still in school. Finally, I am a social worker. I see the daily struggles of families who are trying to do the best they can, especially when systems are letting them down. Schools are not unilaterally responsible for a child's well-being, but I believe that there are ways to create valuable partnerships in order to support children when they need it. Last, but not least, as a previous Board member, I have first-hand knowledge of many of the processes and procedures that are required of the Board. I recognize how difficult it can be to make real change, and I think that at least some of my prior knowledge can give me an edge in some decision-making.

Accomplishments:

Over the last 21 years, I have held leadership positions that gave me experience with varying people from different organizations and backgrounds. Most importantly, I learned how to listen. I will also say that finishing my undergrad and graduate degrees while my children were still in school was an accomplishment! I am proud of the goal I set and achieved. It can be discouraging to be a Board member. My determination and general optimism that there is always a way to find resolution would be an asset to the Board.

Other issues:

Unless we support the whole child, we are not providing an equitable environment. Learning includes social, emotional, and physical health. We cannot only focus on grades and test scores. And we always need to remember that parents know their child better than anyone else.

What else would you like voters to know about you?

I will make decisions based on what is best for the child. I will do my own research and I will also ask questions. Not because I don't trust the administration, but because I want to understand what is driving their decisions. I think there can be a positive balance between trust and research.
