Branford Hornets Are Ready for States
State-tournament play starts tomorrow for four Branford High School teams.

While the football team still has three regular-season games left, four other Branford High School teams are getting ready for the state tournament. The state tournament has already been affected by weather as Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the final week of the regular season, the opening day of states has now been pushed back due to the falling snow.
Boys’ Soccer
The boys’ soccer team, which lost a 1-0 heartbreaker in the finished the regular season with an 10-2-4 record to earn the No. 9 seed in the Class L State Tournament.
The Hornets will host 24th-seeded East Lyme (6-8-2) on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the first round. The winner moves on to the second round on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. to play the winner of the Farmington (No. 8)-Stratford (No. 25) first-round game.

Field Hockey
Finishing the regular season with a 9-3-3-1 record, the Branford field hockey team earned the No. 6 seed in the state tournament. The Hornets also were the No. 4 seed in the SCC Tournament, beating Hamden 2-1 in the quarterfinals before a 0-0 overtime game that top-seeded Cheshire won 4-2 on penalty strokes in the semfinals.
Now the Hornets have their eye on the Class M State Tournament brackets, facing off against 11th-seeded Pomperaug on Friday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. at home.

The winner will advance to the quarterfinals on Monday, Nov. 12 and play the winner of the Farmington (No. 3)- E.O. Smith (No. 14) contest.

Girls' Soccer
The Branford girls' soccer team is looking to carry the momentum from its recent SCC Championship into the Class L State Tournament. The Hornets' 10-5-1 regular-season record earned them the 10th seed in the tourney.
In the first round on Friday, Nov. 9, Branford will host Wethersfield, a team that finished the regular season with a 7-8-1 record for the No. 23 seed. The winner advances to take on the winner of the Joel Barlow (No. 7)- Jonathan Law (No. 26) contest on Monday, Nov. 12.
Volleyball
The volleyball team also just finished play in the SCC Tournament, where they sixth-seeded Hornets beat No. 11 Jonathan Law 3-0 before falling to No. 3 seed Amity 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
In the Class L State Tournament, Branford took the No. 13 seed with a 13-5 regular-season record and matches up against 20th-seeded Pomperaug in the first round on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. at Branford.
The winner moves on to face No. 4 seed East Lyme in the second round on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. East Lyme had a bye in the first round.
