BRANFORD, CT – Branford’s Police Chief is exploring the possibility of adding supernumerarys – or part-time officers - to help supplement the town’s full-time police department force.

At the most recent Board of Police Commissioners meeting, Chief Kevin Halloran told the commissioners that supernumerarys can help fill in gaps in coverage areas for the department.

He said he had two people interested in being supernumerarys – one a retired state trooper and the second a police officer who lives in town and is an officer in another municipal department.

A supernumerary is generally a fully sworn officer who has the same powers as other officers but does not hold a full-time position.

Some departments use assignments in these part-time positions as trial periods for candidates seeking full-time positions.

There was no action taken at the commission meeting on the matter. Halloran said he just wanted to make the board aware of his thinking that it may be worth exploring in the future.
