Branford Police Arrest Man in $248k Wine Theft

A wine distributor told police his exclusive stock was missing. Police arrested one man and will arrest at least one other.

Branford Police arrested an East Haven man who allegedly was involved in a massive $248,000 wine theft from a Branford wine distributor.

The investigation started in June of 2014 when the president of Murphy Distributors told police items from his exclusive wine inventory were missing.

Officer Josef Herten began the yearlong investigation that involved interviewing multiple witnesses and executing search warrants for telephone records.

Police allege that Richard Worthington, 29, of Branford was an employee at the distributor and got help from David Moon, 28, of East Haven.

Moon was charged with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first degree larceny. He was released on a $10,000 bond.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Worthington, who is currently incarcerated on unrelated charges. He will eventually be formally charged wit first-degree larceny and conspiracy.

The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible.
