Branford Police Honor, Mourn Hero Retired Sgt. Frank Myjak
A hero in a tragic 1957 New Haven fire, as a BPD officer, he received Medals of Commendation, and letters of thanks for his service to town.

BRANFORD, CT —In 1957, an historic and devastating fire ravaged a New Haven factory building that housed on its top floors were garment and dress-making businesses. Fifteen people lost their lives. But some who survived could in part thank Frank Myjak, who with his cousins "rescued some women trapped on the third floor fire escape."
Myjak, who would join the Branford Police Department in the summer of 1966 and retire in 2008 as a sergeant, has died, police posted on Facebook.

"It’s with great sadness that Branford Police announce the passing of Retired Sgt. Frank Myjak. Sgt. Myjak began full time employment with the Branford Police Department in August of 1966. He retired from the department in good standing 42 years later, in 2008. Myjak was appointed as Detective in June of 1974, where he served for a short period of time before being appointed to Sergeant in January of 1975. He would be known as “The Sarge” amongst his Branford Police family ever since.
Prior to his police career, Myjak was honored for aiding in life-saving actions during the January 24th, 1957 Franklin Street Fire which occurred in New Haven. Myjak also proudly served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in June of 1959.

Sgt. Myjak will be remembered for his caring and compassion towards both the residents of Branford and his fellow employees. He was a great mentor to rookie officers, and a stern but fair supervisor who could oversee his officers while maintaining their respect.
During his career, Sgt. Myjak accumulated numerous Medals of Commendation and letters of thanks for his service to the town and heroic actions. He was well respected and admired by his fellow officers and many Branford residents. He will be missed-- Rest in peace Sgt. Frank Myjak."
