Branford Police Warn About Surge in Motor Vehicle Thefts In Town
Branford cops say most thefts can be avoided if car owners follow a few simple tips.

BRANFORD, CT - In an average year approximately 33 vehicles are stolen in the town of Branford. In 2017, Branford police responded to a total of 44 motor vehicle thefts.
Police said that 76 percent of the cars that were stolen in Branford last year were stolen because the vehicles were unlocked - with the keys inside.

-- 15 percent were stolen by an acquaintance with key access;
-- 9 percent had the ignition tampered with;

-- 77 percent of the vehicles stolen were recovered. Vehicles were recovered within an average of 16 days from the day they were reported stolen; however, the amount of time before recovery ranged anywhere from 0 days to 232 days;
-- most vehicles were recovered in poor condition, often showing damage consistent with accidents;
-- none of the 3 motorcycles stolen were recovered.
Police said 18 vehicles were stolen from condo or apartment complexes, 19 from single family homes, 4 from motels, 3 others.
Police released the following tips to avoid being a victim: utilize your garage if you have one; always lock your vehicle doors and windows; never leave your keys inside vehicle; park in well-lit areas; keep all items of value concealed; never leave vehicle running unattended; consider installing an anti-theft switch; install a "kill switch; if you see something suspicious, contact police.
