BRANFORD – The two announced Republican candidates running against Democrat for U.S. Senator Chris Murphy are turning up the heat on him concerning allegations against his Democratic colleague Al Franken.

In recent days, Murphy said he will donate contributions he’s received from Franken’s Midwest Values political action committee to an undisclosed local charity.

Murphy’s actions come after one of his 2018 opponent’s, Republican Matt Corey of Enfield called on him to reject the money and condemn Franken’s conduct.

“I demand Chris Murphy return the tainted Franken cash immediately and not wait until he has polled on the issue, or delayed hoping it blows over before he is held accountable,” Corey said. “If Murphy doesn't think the photo alone is enough proof of Franken's guilt, then nothing will.”

Now Branford’s Dominic Rapini, also a Republican candidate for United States Senate, issued the following statement calling on Murphy to call for a vote to remove Franken from the United States Senate:

"It's great that Senator Murphy has finally decided to donate his contributions from Senator Al Franken. What took him so long?

“Senator Murphy has a history of revelations that lead him to a camera followed by an inconvenient truth. In his haste to condemn Roy Moore - Chris Murphy took his time to come out with a half-hearted rebuke of his close friend and contributor - Al Franken,” Rapini continued.

“With Chris Murphy it takes a trigger to act because he is an opportunist and he is never proactive in his support of a cause. Not Healthcare, not Immigration, and not sexual abuse. Now is the time for Chris Murphy to truly fight for women,” Rapini said.

“I call on Senator Murphy to call for a vote to remove Al Franken from the United States Senate.”

Franken, from Minnesota, has come under fire in recent days for groping and kissing a sleeping woman without her consent.

“Sexual harassment is never okay. There is no excuse for Senator Franken's behavior, and I'm glad he has recognized that. I support a Senate Ethics investigation," said Murphy.”
