Cronin Photography Moves With the Industry not the Economy

Closing up shop downtown is a way for studio owner Cheryl Cronin to keep current with industry trends.

“I can’t tell you how many people called to say they are going to miss our windows,” said Elissa Jenny, business manager of Cronin Photography.

Though it will be sad for downtown Branford to lose the artistic touch owner and photographer Cheryl Cronin put into decorating her studios windows at 112 Montowese St., the move out of the space into her home studio is a good thing.

In a time when entrepreneurs are struggling to keep business thriving, Cronin said of her decision to move out of the brick and mortar location on Montowese where Cronin Photography has been for about five years, is a story of “going with the flow of photography, not the economy.”

“Now a days,” Cronin commented, “your website is your storefront.”

Cronin has been specializing in portrait and wedding photography for 12 years and has noticed the trend in the industry change. People, she furthered, don’t want to come in and sit in a studio for portraits. Ninety-nine percent of portraits are now shot on location, she said – gone are the days of perfectly poised families in matching clothes standing on a white backdrop. The photojournalism style of portraiture has changed the way she works, explained Cronin.

When the economy was better, Cronin said she made the moved from her home studio to 112 Monotwese Street for exposure. “It was for the visibility and getting our name out.”

Today, Cronin is well known for her work and happy to be headed back to her beachside home. Located off Linden Avenue, at 215 Pawson Rd., Cronin said, “You certainly can’t beat where we live.”

The picturesque backdrop of Branford's shoreline lends itself to Cronin who said she often uses the beach to set shots as well as hidden gems found along the shoreline like an old beached boat.
