We all know students who excel in academic, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one local resident who is having an impact in Branford.

This submission comes from Kris Leigh, who nominated her daughter Mikenna, a Branford 8th grader.

BRANFORD, CT — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Kris Leigh, who nominated her daughter Mikenna, a Branford 8th grader.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Mikenna is an enthusiastic athlete who has participated in Cheerleading for 7 years competing in yearly competitions with this year making it to Nationals in Florida! All while playing field hockey for her school Walsh Intermediate School in the fall. Mikenna then went right into Softball for Walsh and plays Third base and left field with her accurate catching ability and strong arm she earned the team ball in the 1st game of the season. She also plays on Branford's town team Mendillo Molars and is excited for a great season ahead with both teams. Mikenna also does ballet and tap at Studio One which has contributed to her athletic ability. She works hard at school keeping up good grades and is a friend to all! We are so proud of Mikenna!

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Ever since she was little, Mikenna had always been very sweet, very funny and kind.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Mikenna!
