"For those who follow us regularly, you read my may remember a story from a couple of days ago where Adele was struck and killed by a truck in Branford. There was a baby right by the mom, and we were able to secure that baby and get that baby to a rehabilitation center.

Fast-forward to the next day, and we receive a phone call from the resident stating that there was another fawn on her property in the same area where the first baby was. We went and assessed that baby, and it looked good, so we left the baby in the hopes that it belong to another mommy.

The resident watched the baby for the next few days, and we continued to go out and evaluate the baby.

Today we determined that the baby may have been a twin of the mom though who was hit and killed by the car. We secured that baby and are reuniting her with her sister at the rehabilitation center.

We have to thank our awesome residents for caring as much as they do, for keeping a watchful eye for our wildlife juveniles and for keeping in contact with us.

We also have to give a big shout out to Farm River Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation for coming out to assist us this morning !

P.S. we put a covering over their eyes to help them remain calm while we are assessing them."

Original story:

But it'll be loved and cared for, as it was rescued by the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter. At the scene when its mother was struck, shelter staff took the fawn to the veterinarian, and will soon be on its way to a deer rehabilitation center.

This is not the first call has gotten about fawns lately. Here's what the animal shelter staff want folks to know:

  • Mom deer will leave their babies in sometimes very random places because they may leave them when it’s dark, but they are typically still close by.
  • Do not move them or handle them - if you are concerned, contact a wildlife rehabilitator or your local animal control officer.
  • Don’t ever attempt to feed a fawn - contact your local animal control officer or rehabilitator.
  • You will typically know a fawn needs help if it is approaching humans, or there's non-stop screaming for more than a day, or if it appears lethargic or if you see a dead doe in the area.

In a Facebook post, the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter staff wrote: We want to thank all of our residents of Branford and North Branford for always keeping a look-out for our wildlife friends and for caring enough to call us when they know they need help."
