Former WBC Light Heavyweight Champion to Compete in New Haven Road Race
Hamden resident and WBC Light Heavyweight World Champion, Chad Dawson, is stepping out of the boxing ring to compete in this year's race!

New Haven, CT: Hamden resident and two-time WBC Light Heavyweight World Champion, Chad Dawson, is stepping out of the boxing ring to compete in this year’s 20k race. Professional boxer, Dawson, has been competing professionally since 2001 and trains at Ring One Boxing on Congress Avenue in New Haven. Dawson holds impressive accolades in the boxing community and hopes to be competitive in this year’s Faxon Law New Haven Road Race.
As an amateur boxer, Dawson won the Under 19 National Championships. Dawson also finished second at the World Championships in 2001. Leading into his professional career, Dawson performed in the light heavyweight category. Dawson became the NABF Light Heavyweight Champion in 2004. At the age of 24, Dawson won the WBC Light Heavyweight title in February of 2007. In this same year, Dawson defended his WBC title in September and again in April of 2008.
In the boxing ring, Dawson is trained by John Scully. Scully formerly trained Dan Birmingham and Floyd Mayweather, Sr. Out of the ring, Michael Dolan, New Haven Road Race board member, trains with Dawson in preparation for this year’s 20k race.

At the age of 7, Dawson moved to New Haven with his family. Dawson is a graduate of James Hillhouse High School in 2000. Dawson currently lives in Hamden with his wife and three children. In 2014, Dawson suffered a shoulder injury forcing him to take a leave from the sport. Dawson has recently undergone surgery and plans to compete again in 2016.
