Hornets Notes: Week in Review/Preview for May 25
A look back at the week that was in Branford and a glance ahead to next week.

The high school regular season finished up this week, but teams have begun competing in conference tournaments or preparing for state tournaments. Both Monday and Wednesday featured a busy slate of Southern Connecticut Conference playoff action. As has been a pattern this spring, pesky rain showers have messed with game schedules.

BASEBALL

The baseball team, behind ace starting pitcher Jeff Stoddard, took the opening game in the Southern Connecticut Conference playoffs Wednesday, defeating Notre Dame of West Haven 2-1. It was the third time this year that Branford has defeated Notre Dame in a one-run game.

Branford had finished its regular season with two consecutive losses, finishing at at 15-5. The Hornets had lost to Xaver 5-4 on May 21 and to Shelton 4-0 on May 22.
TRACK AND FIELD
Both the boys and girls track teams competed at the Southern Connecticut Championships Wednesday. The boys finished in 10th place while the girls finished in 13th.
The boys, who scored 28 points, were led by senior Alex Case, who won the pole vault with a jump of 13 feet. One of the top vaulters in the state, at the State Open during the indoor track season. In addition to Case, two other athletes earned medals for the Hornets–Sam Blackstone finished second in the javelin throw and Brandon Johnson was sixth in the long jump. Coach Rich Biondi said he was not surprised with how his team fared at the more competitive SCC meet after last week. "Our depth helped us at the sectional meet," Biondi said. "Hopefully we'll do better next week at the State (Class M) meet next week."
The girls were led by Kaitlyn Kenney's third-place-finish in the 400 meters. Other scorers for the girls were Hunter Carden, who finished fourth in the pole vault, Allie Kowolenko who finished fourth in the 800 meter, and Anna Atkinson who was fifth in the 100 high hurdles. The Hornets run next at the State Class M meet on May 31 at Middletown High School.
TENNIS
The boys tennis team lost in the opening round of the SCC playoffs Wednesday, falling to Fairfield Prep 6-1. Before the playoffs, the Hornets had lost their last two regular season matches, falling to Amity 7-0 and Daniel Hand 7-0. Next up for the boys is the state tournament, which starts next week.
LACROSSE
Both the girls and boys lacrosse teams fell in the opening round of the SCC playoffs this week. For the girls, it meant the end of the season, but the boys had qualified for the state tournament.
The boys lost Monday to Guilford 13-5. They finished their regular season at 9-7, and 7-5 in the conference. The girls lost Monday to Amity 14-13. They finished their season 6-10 and 4-7 in the conference. A former Hornet lacrosse player has done well for herself in college and
SOFTBALL
The softball team finished its season at 5-14 after losing to Mercy 2-0 on May 21 and losing to Daniel Hand 6-2 on Wednesday.
