Hornets Notes: Week in Review/Preview for Sept. 22

A look back at the week that was in Branford and a glance ahead to upcoming events

With the 2011 , the Branford High School athletic teams have another full slate of games this week and next. Some beautiful fall weather provides a great opportunity to go out and support the Hornets. For a full calendar of schedules,

SOCCER

The girls soccer team has opened the season 1-3. The Hornets, led by captains Melissa Guilemette and Alexis Cran, netted a victory over Jonathan Law and lost to Sacred Heart Academy, West Haven High School and Guilford High School. Junior Kara Doyle has been a defensive standout and was honored with a Blue Collar Award for her consistent effort on the field, according to coach Jen Kohut.  Sophomore Tanya Altrui and  Guillemette have produced most of the offense, with Guilemette scoring 3 goals and an assist and Altrui a goal and 2 assists. The next home game is Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Wilbur Cross.

The boys soccer team has also opened the season 1-3 with losses to Guilford, Daniel Hand and Xavier high schools. The Hornets beat East Haven 3-0 on Wednesday for their first win. They will play six away games before returning to the James L. MacVeigh Athletic Conference for their next home game Oct. 12 against Cheshire.

CROSS COUNTRY

Both the boys and girls cross country teams have competed at an early season invitational race.

At the Windham Invitational on Saturday, the boys finished 10th of 22 teams, while the girls finished 13th. Both teams held a quad meet at Supply Ponds on Tuesday, facing Cheshire, Lyman Hall, and Career high schools. The results for both boys and girls were the same - losses to Cheshire, but victories over Lyman Hall and Career. Both teams are 2-1 and traveled to Rhode Island, Saturday to compete in the Ocean State Invitational.

The boys are led by junior Eric Arsenault, who finished 11th at Windham and won the team's home meet at Supply Ponds Tuesday. The girls are paced by sophomore Sophie Bysiewicz.

FOOTBALL

The Hornets footbal team opened the 2011 campaign with a thrilling victory against Joseph A. Foran High School and then they fell to Notre Dame West Haven this past week. Check out and , click here. The football team will travel to North Haven this week.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Hornets have opened the season at 2-1. Led by captain Jenna Limone, the Hornets defeated Guilford and Cheshire before losing to Daniel Hand High School last Tuesday. Their next home game is Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. against Amity.

VOLLEYBALL

The Hornets are 2-2 with victories against Jonathan Law and Lyman Hall high schools last week. Losses were to Guildord and Amity Regional high schools.

SWIMMING

The girls swim team defeated Daniel Hand High School this week, 103-87. The Hornets were paced by Calla Cameron, who finished first in the 200 individual medly and 100 backstroke. The Hornets also scored victories in in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and the 400 free relay. Their next home meet is Tuesday against West Haven at the Walsh pool.
