Man Struck, Killed By Amtrak Train

Thursday night, William VanHouten, 53, was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Branford.

BRANFORD, CT — A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Thursday night, police said.

William VanHouten, 53, of Branford was killed, Amtrak confirmed.

He was hit by the train in the area near Tabor Lutheran Cemetery.

Branford Police Deputy Chief John F. Alves said the incident was reported to police by Amtrak and officers were able to "locate the deceased on the tracks and turned the matter to Amtrak police."

Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said in a statement to Patch that, “At approximately 9:54 p.m. in Branford, CT, on Thursday, November 21, Amtrak train 178, the Northeast Regional traveling from Washington, D.C. to Boston, came into contact with a trespasser on the tracks. There have been no reported injuries from the 192 passengers on board or the crew.The train remained upright and there was no reported damage to the equipment.“
