Obituary: Frances McVerry Canning, Formerly of Branford

She volunteered at S.A.R.H.A. Seneca and Blackstone Memorial Library for many years.

Frances McVerry Canning, formerly of Branford, died on February 2 2019. She was the wife of the late John J. Canning. She is survived by her children, Claire Canning, Milton, MA, Jane Connors (Kevin) Fairfield, CT, John Canning, Branford CT. and son-in-law Michael Canty, Wallingford CT. Her grandchildren, Michael Canty, Wallingford, CT., Molly Canty, Washington, DC., Kelley Connors, N.Y.C., Luke Connors, New Haven, CT.

Also surviving is her sister, Margaret Flynn, Anaheim CA and her brother Joseph McVerry Hamden, CT. and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Mary Canty, her sisters, Rita McVerry, Katherine Evers, Genevieve Mcmanemon, Mary McVerry and Helen McVerry and brother Thomas McVerry. She was born February 15, 1924 in Waterbury, CT, and raised in Hamden, the daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret (Doohan) McVerry.

She was a graduate of Hamden High School and New Haven State Teacher’s College class of 1946. . Frances moved to Branford after retiring from the Hamden Public School System in 1980. She was a communicant of Saint Mary Church for 28 years, she loved books, nature walks and most important her family.

She volunteered at S.A.R.H.A. Seneca and Blackstone Memorial Library for many years. The family would like to thank the Carolton Convalescent Home of Fairfield for all the wonderful care they provided. Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday morning at 10:00 in St. Mary Church at St. John Bosco Parish, 731 Main St., Branford.

Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to; S.A.R.A.H.
