Obituary: Grant A. Briggs, Jr., 93, of Branford

A US Army First Division Sergeant in Germany, who played sax in the Army band, he served as American Legion Post 83 chaplain for 20 years.

Grant A. Briggs, Jr. of Branford, CT passed away peacefully on December 8, 2021. He was born in New Haven, CT on March 25, 1928 to the late Margaret Greer Briggs and Grant A. Briggs, Sr. He is survived by his son Grant A. Briggs III (Julia) and granddaughters, Allison G. Briggs and Samantha W. Briggs, and his brother Joseph H. Briggs. He also leaves his longtime partner Ruth A. Froggatt of Meriden, CT. He was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth B. Doheny.

Grant was employed by many companies during his career as a Manufacturing Engineer, including Milford Products Corporation, O.F. Mossberg & Sons, United Spar Corporation, and International Silver Company for 17 years.

Grant was a lifelong resident of the Pine Orchard neighborhood in Branford. He graduated from Branford High school in 1946. He was also a graduate of the University of New Haven. Grant was a Sergeant in the United States Army First Division in Germany, where he played the saxophone and clarinet in the Army Band from 1946 to 1948.

Grant was a loyal member of the American Legion Post 83 in Branford, CT and served as the Chaplain for over 20 years for the post. He was very proud of this position and participated in many Memorial Day and Veterans Day parades, assemblies and fallen war hero services.

Grant had many interests including deep love of music, an avid ballroom dancer, serving others, and fixing anything that was broken. He enjoyed keeping people in stitches with his quick and witty humor.

Services will be held on January 14, 2022 at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford, CT 06405. Visiting hours 5-7 PM, with service at 7 PM.

In lieu flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the American Legion, Post 83, 243 North Main Street, Branford, CT 06405.
