Obituary: ​James N. MacKinnel, Jr., of Branford

He formerly coached in the Branford Little League as the head coach of the Branford Elks team, winning many championships.

James N. MacKinnel, Jr., of Branford, died Wednesday January 18, 2017 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of the late Ann Carr MacKinnel. Mr. MacKinnel was born in New Haven February 3, 1927, a son of the late James N. and Eba Lund MacKinnel.

He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Navy. He was a graduate of UConn, where he played on the men's basketball team for three years. He worked for 36 years at SNET, retiring as a supervisor in 1985. He was a longtime member of the SNET Tigers softball team, playing into his forties. He formerly coached in the Branford Little League as the head coach of the Branford Elks team, winning many championships. He was also a member of the East Haven Stoners.

He was an avid sports fan, especially of the UConn Huskies men's and women's basketball teams, the New York Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals. Mr. MacKinnel is survived by his sons, Michael (Diane) MacKinnel of Shelton, Doak (Maryellyn) MacKinnel of Guilford, Peter MacKinnel of SC, and Christopher (Michelle) MacKinnel of Branford; his grandchildren, Kathleen (Joshua) Nugent, Caroline, Matthew, Megan, Taylor, Brian (Christina) and Christopher (Karen) MacKinnel; his great-grandchildren, Charlie, Brian Cody, Logan and Caleb; and his brother Donald (Phoebe) MacKinnel.

He was predeceased by his sister Joan Bowden. His family would like to thank the staff at Smilow Hospital 9th floor, Dr. Alexander Pine, Dr. Angela King, Stephanie Krasinski, RN, Elizabeth Falk, RN, Joe Foran, RN and Joel Domingo, RN, for the care and support given to their father during his final days.

Funeral from the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford, Monday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church at 10:00. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford. Friends may call Sunday from 4 – 7 PM.
