Obituary: John F. “Jack” Poulton, of Branford

John F. “Jack” Poulton, a lifelong resident of Short Beach, died on Wednesday, February 6, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of Nanako Poulton of Short Beach. They raised three children: John Poulton (wife Ellen) of Hamden, Linda Nietlisbach (husband Alan) of Madison, and Eileen Cimino (husband Steve) of Branford. Jack loved Short Beach, and looked forward to the Short Beach Day Parade every year.

He lived his whole life in the same house his grandfather bought in the late 1800s. For many years he owned and operated Poulton’s Service Station, and was a volunteer fireman in Short Beach.

Jack was so proud of his grandchildren — Steven (wife Nicole), Brandon, Francesca, Nicole, Marcel, Carson, and Taylor — and never hesitated to tell them he loved them. And he loved his granddogs almost as much as his grandchildren.

Jack was born to parents Edwin and May Hill Poulton in Branford on February 20, 1930. He was predeceased by his brothers Edwin “Ted” and Robert “Bob”.Jack was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War. When he was stationed in Japan during the war he met his beloved wife Nanako. He loved to travel, especially to Lobster Lake, Maine, where in his younger years he enjoyed fishing with his brother Ted and dear friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to play practical jokes on his friends.

He also cheered enthusiastically with his wife for the New York Giants and the Boston Red Sox. He was often seen working on puzzles on the dining room table and eating chocolate (his family was often on the lookout for the biggest bar of chocolate they could find for him). Above all, he loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

His family held a private memorial to celebrate his life. The W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford, was in care of arrangements.
