Obituary: Joseph J. "Pop" Duell, 94, of Branford

He was a communicant of St. Mary Church in Branford and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Branford.

Joseph J. "Pop" Duell of Branford died on Saturday February 27 at CT Hospice in Branford.

He was the husband of Carol Ericson Duell of Branford. He was the father of Debra Cole (husband Michael) , Scott Duell (wife Marjorie), and Jeffrey Duell, all of Branford.

He was the brother of Helen Meili of Pompano Beach, Florida. He is also survived by his grandchildren Michael Cole of Branford and Alyssa Warner (husband Kurt) of Madison, and his great-grandchildren Austin Warner and Harrison Warner. He was predeceased by his sisters Bertha Burrone, Jane Grabowski, Mildred Johnson, and his brother Lawrence Duell.

Joseph was born in Branford on November 13, 1921, a son of the late Lawrence Duell and Emelia Matyka Duell Rallius. He was a World War II Veteran who served in the U.S. Navy for four years on the USS Steamer Bay and the USS Prairie in the Phillipines.

He was married to the love of his life Carol for 67 years. His family, his home, and his gardens were his other passions in life.

He was a tremendous athlete and was an avid golfer. He was also a former member of the Shoreline Baseball League. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the UCONN Huskies. He was a Survey Party Chief for the State of CT for more than 30 years, retiring in 1983. He was a communicant of St. Mary Church in Branford and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Branford.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 10:00 at St. Mary Church in Branford. Burial of his urn will follow at Tabor Cemetery in Branford. There will be no calling hours.
