Obituary: ​Liberato (Libby) Biaggio Riccio, 86, of Branford

Liberato (Libby) Biaggio Riccio of Branford, age 86, entered into eternal rest peacefully on December 20, 2017 with his children by his side. Libby was born on August 24, 1931 in New Haven, CT to Joseph and Elizabeth Riccio.

He was co-owner of Libby’s Excuse Room Café and the former owner of the Sparkling Cave in East Haven. Libby will be missed dearly by his family and patrons. He was predeceased by his wife, Victoria Minore Riccio, in April of this year.

He leaves his devoted and beloved children Joseph Riccio and Elizabeth (Michael) DeFusco as well as his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law in the Minore family. Libby also leaves children Karen (Art) Sapienza, Gina Kline (Charlie Rose) and Libbi Gaiser as well as grandchildren Jacky (Anthony), Michael, Vincent, Gianna, David, Rachael, Toby Lynn and Abigail and former wife Angela Riccio. He also leaves brothers Joseph Riccio, Jr. and Richard Riccio.

Libby leaves many special patrons who frequented Libby’s for years and enjoyed conversations with him about just about anything that was on their mind including politics and sports. Libby was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his beloved Cowboys and the Red Sox, rarely missing an opening day game.

He and Vicci made annual month-long trips to Aruba for over 30 years. In addition to his parents and wife, Libby was predeceased by his son James Riccio, his sister Nancy Riccio Criscuolo, brother David Riccio and his in-laws, Philip and Theresa Minore.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Libby’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The family would like to thank the staff at Smilow for their compassionate care during Libby’s illness.
