Obituary: Renate Dorpalen, 95, of Branford
Throughout her career and through her volunteerism, Renate believed in the power of community and was a tireless advocate for children.

Renate Dorpalen, of Branford (formerly of Guilford) died peacefully on September 28, 2017. She was 95 years old. Born in Berlin Germany, she was the daughter of the Georg and Alice Dorpalen and was predeceased by her brothers Andreas, Thomas and Michael. Renate fled to England in 1939 and remained there throughout World War II.
She immigrated to the United States in 1947 and settled in New York City. Despite many academic and professional achievements, her United States naturalization papers remained her most valued possession.Renate was a graduate of Hunter College and earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Case Western Reserve. Renate worked as a clinical social worker at Clifford Beers Guidance Clinic until her retirement in 1985. Throughout her career and through her volunteerism, Renate believed in the power of community and was a tireless advocate for children. Renate is survived by her son George Brocksieper and his wife Susan, of Guilford, and her grandsons Ian Brocksieper of Guilford, Jacob Brocksieper of Annapolis MD, and Colin Brocksieper of Guilford. Renate will also be deeply missed by numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
