Obituary: Richard (Rick) Steven Barker, 70, of Branford

Richard “Rick” Steven Barker, 70, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2024, surrounded by his family. A beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, Rick leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will forever be cherished by those who knew him.

Rick is survived by Lynda Darroch Barker, his devoted wife of 37 years; their children Devyn and Darren; and his siblings Robert (Ruth Anne) Barker, Donald Barker, Thomas Barker, Karen (Mark) Kalfas, and Kenneth Barker. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Mary Gunderson, brother-in-law Ronald (Edna) Darroch, sister-in-law Laura (Steven) Capasso, nieces and nephews Zea Barker, Cole and Tara Lauro, Emily and Matthew Darroch, cousins, and many dear friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity.

Born December 24, 1953, in New Haven, CT, Rick was the son of Margaret “Peg” Barker and Herbert Barker, with whom he now reunites. A lifelong resident of Branford, CT, Rick was deeply rooted in his community, inheriting a strong work ethic from his parents who ran Branford Dairy for many years. At the age of 18, he founded Rick Barker Landscaping, a business he took great pride in, developing long-lasting relationships with his customers and employees. A man of faith, Rick was also a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Branford.

Anyone who knew Rick knew his true passion lay in music, which he played professionally throughout his life. Known as a local legend for his guitar playing and the way he brought joy to the crowds, he performed with many bands and duos throughout the years including Red Level, The Charm, Rick & Bill, and many more. In 1985, Rick performed at the first annual Branford Festival, opening for Arlo Guthrie.

In addition to his love for music, Rick was an avid sports fan, always cheering for his beloved Giants, Yankees, and UConn Huskies. He enjoyed attending Yale football and basketball games, as well as coaching his son's basketball team.

Most of all, Rick was a dedicated family man. He shared a deep love with his wife Lynda and took immense pride in their children, Devyn and Darren. Time spent on Cape Cod held a special place in Rick’s heart, where he vacationed as a child and later proposed to Lynda and created memories there with his own family.

Rick was a rockstar in every sense of the word. His gentle demeanor, positive outlook, and infectious smile touched the lives of all who knew him. He faced life's challenges with courage and resilience, and while he may be strumming classic rock melodies with the angels now, he will continue to inspire those around him to embrace each day with optimism and gratitude.

The family would like to thank Rick’s liver donor, Cathy DiNoto; Dr. Michael Schilsky and his medical team; as well as Rick’s caretakers for their compassionate care over the years. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Branford on Saturday, March 30, at 11:30 am, followed by a gathering to celebrate Rick’s life.
