Obituary: Roger J. Merrill Jr., 90, of Branford

An Airman in WWII, he worked at Coca-Cola, was a lineman and owned a mower repair shop. He loved the Yankees, Entenmann's​ and a good joke.

Roger J. Merrill Jr., 90, died peacefully February 27, 2021 in his home. He was born September 15, 1930 in New Haven Ct, the son of Roger and Lucille (Cosby) Merrill.

Upon graduating high school, Roger enlisted and served in the United States Air Force Airman First Class (Germany). He was a faithful member of the 2nd Company CT Foot Guard. Roger rose through the ranks to Sergeant Major, and after serving actively for 55 years and never missing a reunion, retired to Brevet Captain.

In 1956, Roger married Jean Santa Barbara and eventually settled in Branford. Roger and Jean were avid cruisers and enjoyed a night at the casino. Roger and Jean celebrated 54 years of marriage before her passing in 2014.

Roger loved to tinker! He worked for Coca-Cola, UI as a lineman, and eventually owned his own lawn mower repair shop. Roger loved the New York Yankees, Entenmann’s sweets, and a good joke.

In addition to his parents, Roger was predeceased by his wife Jean. Roger is survived by his brother, Richard Merrill and Sister-in-law, Thelma of Branford, nephew, Rick Merrill of Cheshire, and his wife Doreen; nephew, David Merrill of South Carolina, and his wife Lori; nephew, Chris Merrill of Massachusetts, and his wife Tina; and nephew, Michael of Branford. Roger’s grandnephews and grandnieces: Clay, Bryce, Lexine, Ryan, Patrick, Michael Jr., Daria, and Daniel.

Roger will be remembered fondly by his Goddaughter, Tracy Wetmore of New Hampshire, Robert, and Brooke Hopkins along with their daughters, Kate, Kristen, and Kerry of Woodbridge, and Ray Matthews, close friend of over 55 years.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 5th, 2021 from 10 to 11 a.m. at W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street Branford. Burial will be immediately following at St. Agnes 295 E. Main St. Branford.
