Obituary: Selma (Sopkin) Lapides, 94, of Branford

Selma (Sopkin) Lapides, 94, of Branford, CT passed away peacefully on July 27, 2023. She was the daughter of Max and Lillian Weiss of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where she and her brother, Samuel Weiss spent their childhood. She resided in Westport and Stratford, Connecticut, and Providence and Warren, Rhode Island.

She married Ralph Sopkin (deceased) and together they raised their three beloved daughters in Westport, CT: Debra Bento (Robert, deceased), Marjorie Sopkin (Tom McCabe), and Jane Kunkel (Paul). She adored her six grandchildren: William Bento (Darlene), Jeffrey Bento, Patrick Buckley, Melissa Orrino (Nick), Dana McCabe (Jeffrey Caplan), and Emma McCabe (Nishant Chandrashakar); and treasured her four great grandchildren: Hailee Parenteau, Michael John Buckley, (deceased), Ava Cervizzi and John Michael Orrino.

In 1987, she married Phil Lapides (deceased) whose family she also adored and considered her own: daughters Sally Lapides (Arthur Solomon) and Wendy Lapides, (John McCann) as well as four grandchildren: Julia McCann, and Michael McCann: Ian Barnacle and Emmett Barnacle, and four great grandchildren: Juliet and Oliver Barnacle, Troy Barnacle and Jason Clark.

Selma will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.
