Obituary: Walter E. Williams, 96, of Branford

Walt was the founder and owner of the Walter E. Williams Overhead Garage Door Co. until his retirement in 1988.

Walter E. Williams, 96, of Branford, husband of the late Elsa Lind Williams, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2016 at Bran ford Hills Health Care Center.

Walter was born in New Haven on November 24, 1919, son of the late Walter and Sadie Williams. He and Elsa settled in Bran ford after their marriage in 1941.

He was thefather of Sandy (Glen) Newell of Bran ford. A much loved grandfather, he leaves grandchildren Wendy (Tim) Williamson, Kim (Scott) Brownell, Nancy (Chuck)Poronteau, Tracey (Jeff) Strand, Kierstin (Ali) Eraybar, Karl (Wieke) Newell, Erika Newell, and Jon-Erik Newell. He Lily, and Rosie.He was predeceased by his daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Vincent Linsley, grandson, Christopher Williams Newell, and sisters, Bea Paradis, Irene Vreeland, Lorayne Smith, and Ruth Thompson.

Walt was the founder and owner of the Walter E. Williams Overhead Garage Door Co. until his retirement in 1988. He joined the Short Beach Fire Dept. in 1942. He became a lifetime honorary member in 1992. He served on the Finance Board of the Short Beach Union Church for many years.

Walt was a past member of Widow's Son Lodge #66 in Branford. He joined the Branford Exchange Club in December 1967 and served in many capacities including president, eventually becoming a Lifetime Member.

He will be fondly remembered for all of the Good Humor Ice Cream he provided over the years! We are all so blessed to have had ``Gramps"at his granddaughter Kierstin's wedding July 15, 2016. The family would like to thank Branford Hills Health CareCenter for the wonderful care he received the last 3 years of his life.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday October 8, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford. Please bring or be prepared to write down your favorite memory of Walter. Dated and labelled photos will be welcome; we will put them together i na memory book. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Parent and Child Center at Bristol Hospital, 9 Prospect St., Bristol, CT 06010, reference Branford Exchange Club or Short Beach HH&L Co. #4, 64 Shore Drive, Branford, CT 06405.
