Obituary: William L. Thompson of Branford

He was a volunteer firefighter and 74 year member of Short Beach Hose, Hook and Ladder Company 4, and long-time fire commissioner.

William L. Thompson of Branford, died Sunday October 21, 2018 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to the late Dorothy Emons Thompson. Bill was born in New Haven May 12, 1925, son of the late Robert P. and Lillian Collier Thompson. Bill was a U. S. Navy of World War II, serving in both the European and Pacific Theaters, on motor torpedo boats. He was awarded five bronze battle stars, and a squadron commander’s service award.

He retired from Olin Corporation in 1987 as a Senior Research Technician. Bill was heavily involved in community service, as a volunteer firefighter and 74 year member of Short Beach Hose, Hook and Ladder Company 4, serving as a Branford Fire Department Commissioner for 15 years, on the Branford Parks and Open Space Board for 6 years, as a member of the Branford RTM for four years. He was a past member of the BPOE #1939 in Branford, a past member of BPOE #1784 in Westbrook and was a past member of the Branford Veterans Association.

He was a communicant of the former St. Elizabeth Church in Branford where he served as an usher for many years. Bill is survived by his children, Lynne (Jerry) Schmitz of Branford and William P. Thompson of Florida; his grandson, David W. (Sarah) Laurello of Branford; his brother Roger Thompson of East Haven; and his sister-in-law Sally Thompson of Chaplin, CT. .

He was predeceased by his brothers, Harry and Robert Thompson, and his sisters, Elizabeth Belbusti, Marie McNeely and Jeannette Collins.Funeral from the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street, Branford, Wednesday morning at 9:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Therese Church at 10:00. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 - 8:00 PM.
