April is Poetry Month, and the Blackstone Library is celebrating with gusto! We've got a poetry display up in the lower rotunda, featuring some of our favorite poets and poems. Take a look - see any of your favorites?
On Saturday, April 13th, we're hosting an open mic session & poetry reading by Sarah Pemberton Strong, a local award-winning poet and novelist. She'll read a couple of her favorite poems, then open the floor up to YOU! Come share two poems - your own or someone else's. Sign up for open mic at 1 PM — the reading will begin just after that. We're so excited to have a chance to hear your voice and let you share it with others.
On Thursday, April 18th, it's "Poem in Your Pocket Day". From their website: "The idea is simple: select a poem you love during National Poetry Month then carry it with you to share with co-workers, family, and friends. You can also share your poem selection on Twitter by using the hashtag #pocketpoem."
The Blackstone will be celebrating by sharing pocket-sized poems with you - stop in that day and pick out a poem. Take it with you and share it, pocket it, post it... whatever you want!
_______
Like people, poetry comes in all shapes and sizes... sometimes it rhymes, sometimes it's just three words strung together. There's a poem out there that can change your world, and one that can provide much comfort. Poetry can be silly and funny and nonsensical. It can be serious and sad and happy - sometimes all at once. Find YOUR poem, find YOUR voice, at the Blackstone this month!
