Scratch & Sniff Guide to Becoming a Wine Expert

The holidays are upon us and, with that, it’s time for gifting. There are about a billion wine gadgets to give wine-loving individuals that will likely end up in the cabinet never to be seen again.

BUT. The Scratch & Sniff Guide to Becoming a Wine Expert by Robert Betts is one that is sure to make any party more fun and will also be useful. The book contains 16 scents from fruit to oak to earth and creates a seamless way for people to begin to identify the wine they are looking for – textbook examples, of course.

Richard Betts is one of the few Master Sommeliers in the world and created the book in an effort to find a better way of teaching wine-interested individuals.

The book divides the scents into easy-to-understand passages showcasing things such as red fruits and black fruits and then identifying what the finding of each scent could lead you to identify. It’s similar to the aroma kits some have been convinced to buy, but in all honesty, those scents are generally so intense and often not based on real life to the point where the pungent nature of each can be both off putting and the only least bit helpful.

Personally, I love the concept of this book because many people want to know more about wine and about identifying the types of wine they like, but don’t have the time, money, and/or energy to invest in the more complicated process of it. Reviewers both online and in real life find that it’s a great read for all those learning to jump more into wine and find that it’s not only something fun, but also something useful.
