You Can Help: Branford Police Applying For Highly-Prized Recognition

Folks can join the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies process with feedback on Branford PD public safety performance.

BRANFORD, CT —There are only 30 of more than 90 Connecticut municipal police departments that are Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies-accredited. The Branford Police Department is "committed" being one of them.

As explained by the department, becoming a CALEA accredited agency is a "highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence."

Branford police began this journey in February 2020 and is excited to announce after a three-year self-assessment and a web based inspection, an assessor from the CALEA will conduct an in-person assessment. They will be examining all aspects of the Branford Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services this week.

As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to comment for feedback on Branford Police Department’s performance as a public safety entity.

"This is an opportunity for comments, commendations, and other information regarding the agency’s quality of service or other information relevant to the accreditation process," police said.

Branford police's accreditation managers, Lt. Corrianne Carangelo and Crime Analyst, Dominique Virgulto invite the community to comment through the CALEA Public Portal by clicking here for the Branford Police Department.

Some benefits of participation in CALEA Accreditation include but are not limited to:

  • Greater Accountability within the Agency-CALEA Standards give the CEO a proven management system of written directives, sound training, clearly defined lines of authority, and routine reports that support decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Increased Community Advocacy-Accreditation embodies the precepts of community-oriented policy. It creates a forum in which law enforcement agencies and citizens work together to prevent and control challenges confronting law enforcement, and provides clear direction about community expectations.

The purpose of the CALEA accreditation process is to improve the delivery of public safety services, primarily by: maintaining a body of professional standards, developed by public safety practitioners, which cover a wide range of up-to-date public safety initiatives; establishing and administering an accreditation process; and recognizing professional excellence.

During the assessment next week, the CALEA assessor will verify that Branford Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards, which is a voluntary process of obtaining accreditation. Upon completion of their review, the Commission’s assessors report to the full Commission, this will then decide if our department is to receive our initial Accreditation Award.
