21 Sickened After Dangerous Carbon Monoxide Levels Found In Bridgeport Apartment

Officials found that the carbon monoxide levels inside the building were nearly twice the level considered toxic to humans.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — Nearly two dozen people living in a Bridgeport apartment building were hospitalized early Saturday morning after authorities discovered dangerous levels of carbon monoxide inside.

The Bridgeport Fire Department responded to the building at 22 Oak Street around 2:45 a.m. after receiving a carbon monoxide call, officials said in a news release.

When authorities arrived, they discovered a generator running in the building's basement. According to officials, residents were using the generator after the building's power was shut off due to a recent bus fire at the location.

Officials found that the carbon monoxide levels inside the building were 2,100 parts per million, nearly twice the level considered toxic to humans.

According to officials, 21 people suffering from symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning were taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital and Bridgeport Hospital for evaluation.

"The Bridgeport Fire Department wants to remind residents when using a generator to keep it outside and away from enclosed spaces like homes, garages, and crawl spaces," officials said in a statement.

The incident remains under investigation.
