BRIDGEPORT, CT — A Bridgeport man, who Immigration and Customs Enforcement said is an El Salvadorian in the United States illegally, was detained by ICE agents last week while waiting at a school bus stop with his son in Bridgeport, the Connecticut Post reported.
Javier Anibal Melgar was reportedly taken into custody on May 15 as he and his 16-year-old son sat in a car on Park Avenue, awaiting the bus to take the teen to school in New Haven.
According to a statement from ICE obtained by the Post, Melgar entered the U.S. illegally in 2005, was ordered to be deported that year, but remained in the country illegally ever since.
Both Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, in addition to advocacy groups, reportedly criticized the move, calling it cruel.
