BRIDGEPORT, CT — The Bridgeport Emergency Operations Center, in conjunction with Mayor Joe Ganim, is advising residents to take precautions during a period of high temperatures and to use cooling centers during normal business hours.
Cooling center protocol is active through 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 14.
Residents may use designated cooling centers as shelter during periods of extreme heat and increased health risks, including for people with asthma. Officials also advised residents to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
People experiencing homelessness may seek shelter during the air quality advisory by calling 211.
Dr. Elizabeth Rivera-Rodriguez, director of the Bridgeport Health and Social Services Department, provided guidance for staying safe during the heat.
“We are encouraging our seniors and most vulnerable populations to take care of themselves during this period of extreme heat by following these tips,” Rivera-Rodriguez said.
The department recommends that residents:
Stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible and keep shades or curtains closed.
If a home is not air-conditioned, spend time in an air-conditioned building such as a cooling center, shopping mall, senior center, library or a friend’s home.
Limit the use of ovens and cooking appliances that generate heat.
Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothing.
Take cool showers or baths.
Limit time outdoors, particularly when performing strenuous activities such as gardening or lawn work.
Stay hydrated and limit coffee consumption.
Check frequently on older adults and other vulnerable individuals during periods of extreme heat.
