Summer has a way of pushing bedtime later.

Dinner stretches into the evening. Kids stay up for movies, sleepovers or one more game. And even parents find themselves staying up a little later too.

Then the first day of school gets closer, and suddenly everyone needs to fall asleep and wake up much earlier.

"Sleep schedules often shift during the summer, and that's completely normal," says Mehak Gandhi, MD, with Hartford HealthCare Medical Group. "But your body can't always adjust to a new schedule overnight."
