BRIDGEPORT, CT — A 62-year-old Bridgeport man died early Friday morning after losing control of his vehicle and crashing near the intersection of Fairfield and Railroad avenues, according to police.
The Bridgeport Emergency Operations Center received multiple calls reporting the single-vehicle crash at approximately 12:20 a.m. . Callers reported that a male driver had lost control of his vehicle and struck a wall, causing the vehicle's airbags to deploy.
When Bridgeport police officers arrived, firefighters from Engine 7 were assisting the driver, who was trapped inside the vehicle.
Emergency responders extricated the driver, who was transported by American Medical Response to St. Vincent's Medical Center. Despite efforts to save him, the man died from his injuries a short while later, according to police.
According to preliminary findings, the vehicle was traveling east on Fairfield Avenue when the driver lost control, veered left and drove onto the sidewalk. The vehicle then struck an area between a city light pole and a concrete retaining wall, where it came to rest.
The Bridgeport Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and conducted a reconstruction as part of the investigation.
Bridgeport police did not release the identity of the victim as of Friday afternoon.
The investigation remains ongoing and is assigned to Bridgeport Police Officer Nathan Fowler.
