BRIDGEPORT, CT — Bridgeport homeowners now have access to optional repair protection plans for residential water service lines, sewer lines and interior plumbing systems through a new program announced by Mayor Joe Ganim and the City Council.
The program, which became available Oct. 1, is offered through SLWA Insurance Services, an independent company that is part of HomeServe North America, in partnership with the National League of Cities.
The plans are intended to help homeowners manage unexpected repair expenses involving utility service lines and plumbing systems. Homeowners are generally responsible for maintaining and repairing certain water and sewer lines on their properties, and repairs resulting from normal wear and tear are typically not covered by standard homeowners insurance policies.
"As Mayor, one of my priorities is finding new ways to support our residents and help families protect their homes and financial well-being," Ganim said. "Unexpected home repairs can be costly, especially for homeowners who may already be managing rising household expenses. This program gives Bridgeport residents another option to prepare for these emergencies and potentially avoid significant repair bills."
Ganim said the program would be offered without additional costs to the city or taxpayers.
According to city officials, Bridgeport is the first major city in Connecticut to offer the voluntary program. Other Connecticut communities participating include Ansonia, Ellington and Harwinton.
Similar programs are available in municipalities across the country, including Chicago, Phoenix, San Diego, Las Vegas and Charlotte, North Carolina.
City Council President Jeanette Herron said the program gives residents another option for managing home repair expenses.
"For many families, their home is their most important investment, and an unexpected water or sewer line repair can create a serious financial hardship," Herron said. "By making this optional protection program available, we are helping homeowners better understand their responsibilities and giving them an opportunity to consider additional protection and peace of mind."
Bridgeport homeowners can choose from three optional plans administered by SLWA Insurance Services:
Homeowners enrolled in an eligible plan will have access to a 24-hour emergency repair hotline. SLWA will coordinate covered repairs with qualified local contractors familiar with applicable codes and repair requirements.
According to the city, the plans have no service fees or deductibles for covered repairs. Covered repairs also carry a one-year guarantee, subject to the terms and conditions of each plan.
City officials emphasized that homeowners are not required to purchase coverage, and enrollment is not necessary to maintain utility service.
The plans are administered by SLWA Insurance Services and issued by Virginia Surety. SLWA will handle marketing, enrollment, customer service and coordination of covered repairs.
The city said no public funds will be used to administer or promote the program.
Bridgeport homeowners will begin receiving informational materials by mail outlining the available plans, coverage options and enrollment procedures.
Officials encouraged residents to review coverage limits and exclusions before enrolling and to check with their homeowners insurance providers to determine whether they already have similar protection.
Residents interested in reviewing coverage options or enrolling can contact SLWA Insurance Services at 1-844-257-8795or visit www.slwofa.com.
Homeowners who do not want to receive future program-related mailings can also call SLWA to request removal from its mailing list.
SLWA is part of HomeServe North America, which serves more than 4.5 million homeowners in the United States and Canada. The companies work with more than 1,350 municipalities and utilities to offer optional home repair protection programs.
