BRIDGEPORT, CT — A 38-year-old Bridgeport man was fatally shot Monday evening on the city's East Side, marking Bridgeport's ninth homicide of 2026, according to police.
Police identified the victim as Bernard Fludd, who lived one block from where the shooting occurred.
At approximately 7:34 p.m., police received a ShotSpotter alert indicating a single gunshot on Barnum Avenue, and a 911 caller on nearby Mill Hill Avenue also reported hearing the shot. ShotSpotter is a gunshot detection system.
Responding officers found Fludd lying unresponsive on Mill Hill Avenue near the intersection with Barnum Avenue. He had suffered a gunshot wound.
Fludd was taken by ambulance to nearby Bridgeport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"Officers detained several persons who were seen running into a house on Mill Hill Avenue after the shooting," Det. Jeffrey Holtz wrote in a statement. He did not elaborate on whether any those detained are facing charges.
Mill Hill Avenue near Grant Street was closed for several hours Monday night as the department's Major Crimes Unit processed the scene.
The shooting remains under investigation, and detectives executed a search warrant at the house early Tuesday morning.
Anyone with any information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Thomas Harper at 203-581-5239.
