Bridgeport To Discipline 4 In Scrap Metal Controversy

Four public facilities workers were disciplined after they were found to be mishandling funds that came from the sale of scrap metal.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — Four members of the Bridgeport Public Facilities Department will be disciplined after an internal investigation into the sale of scrap metal.

Director John Ricci will forfeit two weeks of employment salary and two weeks of vacation time. Three others will receive charges.

“These disciplinary measures have no ramification on any criminal investigation that is moving forward,” said Mayor Joe Ganim. “As I stated a month ago when we first learned of the possible mishandlings of monies, any employee found in violation will be subject to immediate disciplinary action.”

The FBI is conducting a criminal investigation.

Ricci told the Connecticut Post that scrap metal was sold and money was deposited in the department's petty cash account, which was used for meals and morale-boosting activities. The investigations were launched after an anonymous letter alleged that more than $25,000 had been raised from the sale of scrap metal.
