Bridgeport Hospital Patient Had Unnecessary Hysterectomy: Report

A patient at Bridgeport Hospital mistakenly underwent a total hysterectomy.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A patient at Bridgeport Hospital underwent an unnecessary hysterectomy, according to Connecticut Health I-Team. The error occurred when a patient's biopsy results were contaminated by another patient's.

The patient had a first hysterectomy on Dec. 3, 2018. Then on Dec. 6, a pathology report found that the patient tested positive for fragments of high-grade serous carcinoma. The patient then had a total hysterectomy on Dec. 28 at a different hospital.

However, the second hospital did not find the carcinoma in the tissue and lymph nodes following surgery, according to Connecticut Health I-Team. It was later found that the patient's slide had been contaminated with another patient's pathologic material.
