Bridgeport Man Charged With Assaulting Stratford Officer: Police

The suspect faces several charges after police say he was found to be in the possession of a stolen gun and marijuana.

STRATFORD, CT — A suspect in a possible assault was arrested after police say he injured an officer during a brief struggle and was found to be in the possession of a stolen gun and marijuana. Karel Bynes, 40, of Bridgeport, was arrested Wednesday after he was identified as a suspect in a possible assault, according to police.

When Bynes was approached by a Stratford police officer, he began to fight and a brief struggle ensued, according to Capt. Frank Eannotti.

Eannotti said Bynes was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a handgun stolen out of New Haven and marijuana with intent to sell. The officer suffered minor injuries as a result of the assault, according to Eannotti.

Bynes was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a firearm and one count each of carrying a gun without a permit, fifth-degree larceny, interfering with an officer, assault on an officer, second-degree breach of peace, illegal possession of less than ½ ounce of marijuana, and possession with intent to sell. He was held on a $200,000 bond.

Eannotti said the investigation ongoing.
