Bridgeport Man Killed In Scooter Crash, Police Say

The two-vehicle crash occurred Saturday night on Huntington Turnpike in Bridgeport, according to authorities.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A 61-year-old Bridgeport man was killed Saturday night when the motorized scooter he was operating collided with a Mercedes-Benz on Huntington Turnpike, according to Bridgeport police.

Police said officers were dispatched around 8:45 p.m. Saturday to the area of 1200 Huntington Turnpike on reports of a motor vehicle crash with injuries. Additional information reported a collision involving a car and a motorized scooter, with at least one person unresponsive in the roadway.

Bridgeport firefighters and medics arrived and provided medical aid to three people involved in the crash. The scooter operator was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Responding officers found a heavily damaged two-door Mercedes-Benz and the motorized scooter at the scene, according to authorities.

Police identified the driver of the Mercedes as a 24-year-old Oakville man. A 36-year-old man was riding as a passenger in the vehicle, and both men were taken by ambulance to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

The Bridgeport Police Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash.

"Bridgeport Police have notified the 61-year-old Bridgeport man’s next of kin," said Capt. Kevin Gilleran in a statement. "We offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. They will remain in our thoughts and prayers."

Northbound and southbound lanes of Huntington Turnpike between Broadbridge Avenue and Intervale Road during the investigation, but have since been reopened.
