Police said after the crash that the men were racing and gave officers false statements about what happened. Patterson and Perkins were racing April 6, 2018, on Lordship Boulevard near Access Road. Patterson failed to negotiate a turn in the road while traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control of his vehicle, Capt. Frank Eannotti said last year. The vehicle went off the road, hit a tree and came to rest near a marsh. Edwards died at the scene.
