I remember so well as a youngster going to the airport with my sister and dad to see the private planes take off and land.WE were always excited as they went down the runway.Formerly THE BRIDGEPORT MUNICIPAL AIRPORT now called THE IGOR I.SIKORSKY MEMORIAL AIRPORT has changed over the years.AT one point THE CITY-OF-BRIDGEPORT-owned it even though the property was in STRATFORD.Originally known as AVON FIELD which was a racetrack on the grass infield .This was the very first countries'air show in 1911.These very same grounds is the very same land today known as ST.MICHAELS'CEMETERY.IT was once known as MOLLISON FIELD.BRIDGEPORT purchased the airport at one point in 1937.Then it was called THE BRIDGEPORT MUNICIPAL AIRPORT.IN 1972 THE airport changed names again to THE IGOR I.SIKORSKY AIRPORT..SIKORSKY selected Stratford as his choice to establish his plant there. This was in 1929.Later on in 2007 state legislature from BRIDGEPORT introduced laws allowing the STATE OF CONNECTICUT to take over the airport. The last airline service ended in SEPTEMBER 2009.
