Bridgeport Students Protest Long Walks To School

Some students have to walk two miles on unlit and cracked sidewalks while facing harassment along the way.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — About 30 people protested the length and time it takes students to get to Bridgeport schools with some walking up to two miles away on unlit streets.

A recent Harding High graduate said she had to face cracked sidewalks and harassment on her walk to school and that many of her classmates don't graduate because they are late to first period classes, according to the Connecticut Post. Some fifth graders have to walk up to 1.25 miles to their schools when the limit used to be a quarter of a mile. The school district saved more than $548,000 through the change.
