The Courthouse ON Goldenhill ST.

The Justice System

This courthouse certainly is a historic building dating way back.Photo circa 1930-1945.IN the very beginning there was quite a debate of placing the courthouse in BRIDGEPORT.FAIRFIELD was the very first county seat in 1720.The original courthouse in FAIRFIELD was burnt down by the BRITISH.FAIRFIELD rebuilt a courthouse in 1794.

Bridgeports'first courthouse 1853-1854-was on a lot between STATE AND BANK STREETS.AT the time this cost $75,000 to build. This amount of money also built a jail.THE courthouse was designed by ALEXANDER JACKSON DAVIS-.This resembled a GREEK style temple. The original location did not work out due to traffic noise.

IN 1886 THE COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION decided to build another courthouse. The new court approved APRIL 1886.A site near the northwest corner of GOLDEN HILL ST.near MAIN STREET.THE cornerstone placed JUNE 24,1887.This was a castle like design by Architect WARREN BRIGGS 1888.Today it still stands and the serious crime cases are heard there.A piece of BRIDGEPORTS'HISTORY still stands proudly years later.
