The crashes began at about 10:30 p.m., and occurred northbound on I-95 between exits 27 and 30.
State Police said Shaky Steevenson Joseph, 34, of Waterbury, had not secured the load he was hauling, which resulted in the spill.

Joseph is accused of knowing that the truck was leaking but kept driving, according to state police. He eventually pulled over after his employer, who was contacted by state police, radioed and told him to stop on Route 8 and wait for the troopers.
State police charged Joseph with first-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and operation of a motor vehicle with an unsecured load.
He was released after posting a $25,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Aug. 8.
