Investing in Tomorrow’s Leaders: How BCYL Is Changing Lives in Bridgeport

At Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders (BCYL), we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive—regardless of their circumstances. Since 2003, BCYL has been helping local youth unlock their potential through a powerful combination of education, mentorship, athletics, and leadership development.

The organization was founded by John Torres and his brother, in honor of their late father, as a way to give back to the community that shaped them. What began as a small effort to make a difference has grown into a thriving youth development nonprofit that now serves more than 2,400 young people each year across Bridgeport and beyond.

A Lifeline for Bridgeport’s Youth

At BCYL, we don’t just coach sports or tutor homework—we build futures. Our programs provide:

• Academic enrichment and tutoring
• College preparation and scholarships
• One-on-one mentoring and life skills development
• Basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, cheerleading, esports, etc
• Leadership training and community engagement

From the age of five through high school graduation and beyond, BCYL youth grow up with the support of caring mentors, safe spaces, and meaningful opportunities to lead. Many return to volunteer, mentor, or work within the programs—becoming role models for the next generation.

In times like these, when funding is uncertain and resources are stretched thin, the need for strong youth programs is greater than ever. BCYL remains committed to showing up—day in and day out—for the kids who count on us.

That’s why we’ve launched the Invest in Tomorrow’s Leaders campaign: to ensure that every child we serve continues to have access to the tools, guidance, and encouragement they need to succeed.
